Infection Prevention
Introduction
In every place where people gather, germs can spread around through contact (hands e.g. gastro-enteritis), droplets (e.g. flue), micro-organisms in suspension in the air (e.g. zona). This document describes the importance of disinfection, what products to use and the standard precautions for infection prevention that have to be applied to a medical-technical department. These precautionary measures are based on the standard guidelines of the Ghent University Hospital that are based on the advice (2007) of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). For more information, please contact the GIfMI Research Assistant.
General information
Purpose
These rules form the primary approach to prevent the transfer (via the subject, the environment or materials) of micro-organisms effectively to significantly reduce the risk of hospital infections. Its main goal is to protect the subject and the researcher.
Scope and responsibilities
This document consists of standard precautions that apply to all subjects (and mentors) that are scanned in the GIfMI facilities, regardless of the infection status. These rules must be respected by all researchers and other employees working within or at the GIfMI facilities (waiting room, meeting room, console room, preparation room, scanner room).
Procedure
Hand hygiene
Basic conditions
- Wounds and other skin lesions on the hands are covered with waterproof band aid.
Wash hands with water and soap (40 – 60 “)
- Upon arrival at the GIfMI facilities, before the start of the scanning procedure
- After each toilet visit
- After contact with micro-organisms
This will remove visible dirt and a large part of the transient flora (micro-organisms that occur on the skin without multiplying).

Disinfection of the hands with alcohol 77%
- After coughing, sneezing and / or blowing of the nose
- Between two subjects
The use of alcohol 77% will remove the resident flora (micro-organisms that colonize and multiply on the skin) that remain present on the skin after washed the hands with soap and water. Press the pump at least twice and rub your hands thoroughly until dry; do not forget the thumb fold!

Prevention of transmission of blood-borne diseases
Remove needles, scalpels and other small sharp objects immediately after use and store them in the appropriate, puncture-proof containers.
Attention: the large yellow containers are only appropriate for hazardous and / or large sharp medical waste, this is no ordinary waste bin!

Cleaning
The Clinell® range consists of products for fast and effective simultaneous cleaning and disinfection of The Clinell® range consists of products for fast and effective simultaneous cleaning and disinfection of equipment surfaces. Both the wipes and the spray have a proven bactericidal, fungicidal, tuberculocidal and virucidal effect (non-alcoholic, dermatologically tested).
Clean and disinfect by means of Clinell® wipes and / or spray:
- Between two subjects: the alarm system and the headset
- After completing your scan session: the table, the coil, the control panel, the alarm system and the headset

Waste
Deposit table paper, earplugs and other materials in the blue waste bags for non-hazardous medical waste.

Linen
Deposit linen (bathrobes, sheets, pillow cases, …) in the white bag. Always consider linen as potentially contaminated. Disinfect hands afterwards.
